Mathew Grace, a.k.a. "The Captain", Fallriver, MA, First place and Viewer's Choice first tried his hand at sand sculpting in 2005. A good friend and colleague by the name of Steve Topazio who has had a sand sculpting company for over 6 years, introduced him to the medium. Matt holds a fine arts degree in Illustration and in Art Education from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and has worked in many different mediums throughout his life. When he isn't carving sand he can also be found tattooing, painting murals, sculpting with polymer clay or doing display and design work. A true Jack of all Trades, Matt enjoys the challenge of trying new ways to express himself and affect the world around him through the work he creates.

 Atillio "Steve" Topazio, Tiverton, RI

Steve started his sculpting career while playing in the sand as a young surfer on the beaches of Rhode Island. Eight years ago he entered his first sculpting competition and won. He has been competing all across New England and working on large projects ever since. Known as the Sculptor of the Ocean State, Steve draws from his love of cars when creating his paintings and sculptures. We are honored to have him competing at this historic event. Check out his amazing work at www.sandtasia.com

Suzanne Altamare, Daytona, FL, Second Place

Suzanne has been making a living sculpting sand for over 21 years. She has traveled all over the world working on many large projects. Her energy and amazing attitude has inspired all who have had the pleasure of meeting her. She is a master of the art of soft sand sculpting. That is sand that is simply piled up and not compacted in any way, working with few tools and mostly just her hands. Suzanne creates spectacular works of art. Suzanne has also been  a featured competitor on the Travel Channels hit show Sand Blasters, Extreme Sand Sculpting Championship. You can check out her website at www.justplainsand.com .

First Night Worcester indoor sand sculpting competition was a huge success at the Worcester DCU Center.

Sean Fitzpatrick, Master Sculptor and project manager for the first ever indoor winter sand sculpting competition in the United States has declared the event a huge success. Special thanks go out to the students, teachers and community leaders that volunteered their time during the pound up. Thousands of spectators poured into the Worcester DCU Center to witness 66 tons of sand transform into amazing sand sculptures right before their eyes. When The sand settled at the end of the competition it was Matt Grace from Fall River Massachusetts that walked away with top honors including first place and viewer's choice. Suzanne Altamare from Daytona took second place honors. To see all the finished sand sculptures click here .

Matthew Shamaly, a.k.a. "Matt with the Hat", Revere, MA

A local artist and small construction business owner, Matt has been involved with sand sculpture for the past two years. He spent a couple of years as an apprentice with Fitzy Snowman Sculpting where he learned many techniques as well as freedom of expression. Matt has been an art major at a local school and has been expressing his creative interests with many mediums. In addition to construction, he also specializes in faux finishes and creative designs.

Deb Barrett-Cutulle, Saugus, MA
